Tim Mahoney
(Born February 17, 1970 in Omaha, Nebraska)
Is the lead guitarist for the group 311. Tim is best known for his single-noted riffs, and fusion of punk, latin, rock, and reggae styles. Tim went to Westside High School. In 4th grade he started on trombone before moving to guitar. This is what made him pursue music. Nick Hexum, Tim Mahoney and Chad Sexton lived on the west side of town and went to Westside High School together.
During high school, Nick and Tim played in a rock band together called "The Ed's". Nick graduated at the age of 17. He then returned to Omaha for Chad and Tim's high school graduation - the three of them jammed and realized they had a special musical chemistry. Soon after that keyboardist Ward Bones was added to the mix. Before 311 he also played with Chad Sexton in a band called "The Bushmen". In 1991 he replaced the original guitarist of 311, Jim Watson, and has been with 311 ever since.
I bought my first PRS in 1992. It was a Sunburst CE-24 bolt on. At the time, I was playing a Strat w/ single coils. We (311) were about to record our first record, "Music" and I wanted to get some sort of contrasting guitar with humbuckers. I went to the guitar shop and came across the Sunburst CE. It played like a dream; and with the push/ pull coiltap, it had a bunch of killer tone options. I fell in love with that guitar and used it as my main ride for every gig and recording until it was lost in our RV fire in 1994.
After our RV fire, I was guitarless. At the following day's gig, I played on a borrowed guitar. But the next gig, back to a PRS. PRS were kind enough to send me a guitar the next day, a beautiful "blue beauty" CE bolt on. I'll never forget PRS's generosity.
The next PRS that I got was a natural mahogany Standard 24. Although I now own other models (Santana, maple top Custom, Hollowbody), the mahogany Standard is my favorite. It's been my my main guitar since 1994. My "blue tiki" Standard is what I currently play, and it's my all time favorite guitar."
