"Bob Dylan was partially responsible for the formation of Farm Aid. During his performance at Live Aid, earlier in the year, he remarked between songs that someone should do a benefit for the American farmer. Willie Nelson was watching, and started the ball rolling by contacting Neil Young and John Mellencamp. The first Farm Aid was in 1985, in Champaign, Illinois. They invited Dylan to perform, and as he didn’t have a band together at the time, he asked Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to back him up."
