F12-SESSION 012 // Finom
With years of time spent in Chicago’s improvised music scene, and robust resumes as in-demand collaborators with artists as wide ranging as Chance the Rapper and Whitney, it should come as no surprise that Finom would create something singular and dynamic.
Sharing equal duty as writers, players, and singers they create a world within Finom that is wholly unique and ever evolving. Their excellent new record Not God (out now on Joyful Noise) showcases their restless creative spirit and their beautiful, hypnotic vocals in equal measure.
After their captivating set, they walked us through their road-tested gear and shared the lessons they’ve learned that make it possible to work so closely and so well together. Join us for this exclusive performance from the FRET12 Shop at the Salt Shed.

“A lot of our ethos with this is ‘how can we approach an instrument and make it sound like what it’s not’. I think that works with our voices and that works with our songwriting and a lot of the way we create.”

“We try and do a mix of staying with friends and sometimes staying in hotels so we can get that good reset. If you’re just staying at hotels, it can feel a little Groundhog Day and alienating… but sometimes you really just need a bare hotel room and to not speak to a soul.”

“I think that Not God is an evolution, but I don’t think it’s a departure. I also think that it’s a little hard for us to always identify what it is… So much of making a record is about capturing what’s going on internally for an artist, and often they don’t know how to say what it is. I think about records as capturing a moment in time, that’s what’s so special about making music.”

“This is my favorite pedal I've ever owned, the Reverberation Machine [by Death By Audio]. I started using it for guitar because I like this really cool, dusty kind of distorted reverb... there are a lot of songs in Ganser where I use distorted vocals. It’s just a sound I’ve always wanted for vocals and it’s much more fun to perform as well.”
