"I started playing bass in Brazil when I was 8 years old. My dad got a drum kit for my brother and a guitar for himself and started jamming. I was the younger one and I knew I wanted to play bass."

F12-SESSION 024 // POPS MAGELLAN
Breaking out from an illustrious career as a coveted and renowned session and touring musician, including stints with the likes of Travis Barker, Cimafunk, Avril Lavigne and Adam Lambert, Pops Magellan has entered the solo arena with her new record DAMAGE.
Showcasing her new-age, funky, punky style, DAMAGE is an impressive debut that won't come as a surprise to anyone aware of Pops's prestigious past. We were lucky enough to see her perform a couple songs off the new record live at the FRET12 shop. Following the session we had a conversation with Pops about the genesis of this solo project, how her Brazilian roots influence her sound, her gear setup, and growing up in a family band.

"I think riding motorcycles and traveling by myself is one of the main things that made this meaningful and gave me something to say."

"I had to make the choice to take a break from touring, from working for other people for a minute so I could finish my album."

HARD-WON TOUR TIPS
💥 “School also serves the purpose of being something to kind of come back to and a schedule to be on, which I know is very helpful for me.”
💥 “We brought DVDs on tour, we watched Star Wars.”
💥 “Develop some stable things you do every night that can take away that strange Groundhog’s Day thing from touring.”
💥 “Make yourself wake up early enough to feel like you're real. It's like it's better to not just wake up and immediately get in a car.”
💥 “Taking a walk, eating breakfast, maybe with a piece of lettuce or something, just [doing] little things. Self-care, it’s 2024.”
💥 “Try to fill your days with things that aren’t just driving and moving gear.”

“I grew up singing in front of six, 700 people a week. You know, every Sunday was a concert basically.”

“This is my favorite pedal I've ever owned, the Reverberation Machine [by Death By Audio]. I started using it for guitar because I like this really cool, dusty kind of distorted reverb... there are a lot of songs in Ganser where I use distorted vocals. It’s just a sound I’ve always wanted for vocals and it’s much more fun to perform as well.”
